Ooooooh boy, this must be whaling season, because these whales are getting SLAIN! A must want for me, I went to great lengths to get my hands on this beer. I have heard a lot about it, and of course read the reviews and couldn’t in good conscience be a Beer Advocate without at least trying it once. Having been brewed with Cacao Nibs, Ancho / Pasilla Chilies, Cinnamon and Madagascar Vanilla Beans, this beer definitely has its fair share of outside adjuncts. Well, it certainly looks good on paper.

WOAH, big Big BIG aroma. Rich dark chocolate, light cinnamon, faint vanilla beans; but no chilies. Holy crap the complexities are out of the roof. Very sweet, creamy and smooth. The alcohol isn’t even noticeable, but of course with all the outside ingredients added, it’s not THAT big of a surprise.
Flavor is SO fucking sweet: holy crap. Yes, unfortunately it is cloying in my eyes. Luckily, the chilies give enough of a spicy dryness to try and cut the sweetness, but for the most part, this is a sipper with light drinkability: definitely going to take me a while. You definitely get the flavor from the chilies on the finish, but for the most part the sweetness takes over.
Well, I wish I could give this a 100, but its just too damn sweet. It’s SO tasty, it is just that the chocolate and sugar get to my tastebuds. Of course, it’s still a world class stout that does a lot of things well, but if I had let it sit for a few more months, it might have mellowed down a bit. Oh well, definitely a beer to check off my list. Tasty, but thank god I had a friend to split it.
